Switchel

Switchel is an old-timey drink with many benefits, including detoxifying the body, aiding in digestion and regulates PH levels. Just to name a few perks.  (**Be sure to look up the benefits of each ingredient, you'll be surprised how much is in this simple drink.)  I am also finding it helpful with my pregnancy acid-reflux "adventures". :P

Switchel is slightly tart, a bit sweet and when served cold, very refreshing. It is a great Summer dink to help you stay hydrated, but we like to drink it all year round and actually don't mind it at room temperature.

Below are a few recipes that slightly differ from one another.
My suggestion is to try both to see what your taste buds prefer.
Adjust ingredients as needed.

Recipe # 1 has a nice refreshing taste due to the cinnamon and organic raw honey.
**If you choose to use Honey, please "bee" sure to look into the company that supplies it. We support a local family business called "The Bee Keepers Daughter". They take excellent care of their hives, do not use any harsh chemicals and always make sure the bee's have ample supply of their own honey source before removing a supply for their products. **

Recipe 1:
-2 Cups filtered water
-2 Tablespoons unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar
-1 Tablespoon raw honey
& a heaping 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon

Mix all ingredients together and shake until combined.
Serve cold or at room temp.
Shake well before every serving.

Recipe 2:
-4 Cups filtered water
-4 Tablespoons pure maple syrup
-4 teaspoons unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar
-1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger (We like to add in a few extra slices)

Mix all ingredients together and shake until combined.
You can drink it right away over a few ice cubes or let it steep in the fridge for 12 hours.
Shake well before every serving.

Fun - slightly off topic -  note:

We ended up turning this into a "homeschool" lesson for the kiddo. :P
Little did he know, we were covering Math, Science/Health, Memorization, Following Direction, Team work and History.

Not to mention, this little DIY drink sparked conversation about traveling to different areas of the US to experience foods, drinks and surroundings that differ from ours. He even pulled out one of his books called -Our 50 States - A Family Adventure Across America-. It is a fun illustrated and inspiring book that follows a family as they travel and explore the States.

I love how one simple thing (or task) can open doors that stimulates our children's mind. Hearing the ideas, the questions and the imagination behind their conversation shows us just how much they love to learn. All we have to do is provide them with the resources and encouragement when they have questions.

Cheers to family, home life, health and happiness.
